A good movie poster really stays with you; from one glance it grabs your attention, and imprints its memorable image in your head for the rest of the day. So what makes a movie poster so successful in being creative and alternative? Here are 10 top creative and alternative movie posters for some inspiration!
One of the more memorable in the Batman series, the unforgettable masterpiece that is The Dark Knight, scored a soaring reception from Batman lovers to movie enthusiasts! Boasting critically acclaimed debuts from both Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, it comes as no surprise that the film inspired some imaginative art work in response to it’s release. This poster combines the main elements of the film, most notably the faces of the hero and the victim, which are juxtaposed to create an unsettling image; Batman and his famous antagonist- the joker.
The controversial yet undoubtedly hugely successful film Trainspotting certainly grabbed the attention of the public with its shocking plot line and characters. Likewise, the poster has a similar effect. This poster grips you even without any image- just powerful words in the form of sentences, leading to the crescendo of an ending at the bottom of the poster; “Choose your future. Choose your life”. Powerful words that penetrate not only the consciousness of the films characters, but the people watching it too- the poster achieves that thought provoking sense which the film delivers so well.

Quentin Tarantino’s famous film Pulp Fiction is regarded no less than a classic, as well as a landmark in the history of film! Designer Jacob Wise combined two important aspects of the film with his design, creating an intense image featuring a watch with the lower strap resembling a syringe needle.
- In line with the films quirky and twisted plot, the film Cabin In The Woods features the cabin as a Rubik’s cube, twisted and rotated to represent the films sense of backwardness.
Shocking, controversial and dramatic- the movie poster for the film Nurse 3D grabs your attention straight away. Revealing a naked woman covered in blood, dressed only with heels and a nurses hat, it’s an image so strong and bold, it’s difficult to erase from your memory.

The hard-hitting film that is Hard Candy reverses the audiences’ expectations of what unravels in the plot. By reversing the male predator vs. vulnerable young female stereotype, Hard Candy presents the audience with a sense of irony. This creativity and imagination isn’t spared on the films poster either; featuring Ellen Page’s character in the jaws of an oversized metal trap, her bright red hoodie makes it an image ironically reminiscent of Little Red Riding Hood.

Who could forget the tantalizing array of colours used in Alice Wonderland Disney blockbuster hit? Johnny Depp stars as the entertainingly crazed Mad Hatter and features on the poster set with vibrant and fluorescent attention stealing colours that will turn many heads. Holding a cup of tea, the poster informs the reader “You are invited to a very important date on 3/5/10” making it stick out tremendously.

Released back in 1999 American Beauty is no less striking and thought provoking as we find ourselves looking back over 10 years in remembering a Hollywood classic. The movie poster captures the theme brilliantly, whilst winning the attention of it’s audience due to it’s shock value- a naked woman covered with rose petals isn’t the most PG image around, particularly in the 90’s. Daring, eye catching yet tasteful, the American Beauty posters certainly does the brilliant film justice.
Chilling, gripping and shocking, Cloverfield is a film that evokes a chill down your spine. The movie poster follows suit, featuring the famous iconic image of New Yorks Statue of Liberty with it’s head severed- a powerful image amplified by the sight of the burning and decaying city in the background.

If the quirky film plot doesn’t fixate you, the couple of dozen faces and eyes staring straight at you most definitely will. Lena Headey stars in The Broken, her half broken head featuring on the films poster. Tying in most overtly with the films title, Headey’s broken and shattered skull is a powerful image that adds strong emphasis to the above message “Face your fear”.
