Lately, everyone has been talking about the potential of the <a title="QR code - en.wikipedia.org" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code" target="_blank">QR code</a>. It has become the Internet’s equivalent of traditional barcodes (like those you’d find on physical goods at your favorite retail store).

&nbsp;

Someone can take a quick snapshot of a QR code with their smartphone and immediately have a website up and loaded, so we could print QR codes on paper and physical goods such as business cards, magazine ads and posters in order to lead people to our site.

But, more often than not, web developers don’t use QR codes to their fullest potential.

In this article, we’ll discuss a technique that will unlock the full potential of QR codes through URI schemes.
<h3>How QR Codes Work in a Nutshell</h3>
Let’s learn how the QR code mechanism actually works. QR codes, at their core, are specially generated images that work like barcodes.

Certain commands (known as <strong>responses</strong>) are built in, and when a QR code is captured by a camera (usually one on a smartphone or tablet), the image of the QR code is processed and then the built-in response is carried out.

A common QR code response is to open a certain website in a web browser on the device that captures the QR code.

<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/a5026__0249-02_codes_can_be_beautiful.png" alt="" width="550" height="253" /><span class="figure-caption">QR codes look like the above and contain information that can be captured by a camera and interpreted by a smartphone, tablet or computer.</span>
<h3>QR-Code Readers</h3>
<strong>This is where things get interesting.</strong> QR-code readers — the apps that scan the codes and perform the actions — are not equal when it comes to functionality. Some are able to recognize QR codes and do all sorts of amazing things, and others can simply open URLs or display text.

Most smartphones have the same set of basic features (address book, calendar, texting functionality, alerts and Internet browsing), and a good QR-code reader can cater to all of those.

With low-functionality apps in the mix, though, URL-opening is likely the only reliable function that we can expect most QR-code readers will have.

Here’s a list of features that QR-code readers are generally equipped with:
<ul>
	<li>Displaying text</li>
	<li>Setting up system alerts</li>
	<li>Adding events to calendars</li>
	<li>Opening URLs in a browser</li>
	<li>Collecting contact information (including <a title="30 Impressive vCard Web Designs" href="http://sixrevisions.com/design-showcase-inspiration/30-impressive-vcard-web-designs/" target="_blank">vCards</a>)</li>
	<li>Sending email</li>
	<li>Sending text messages (SMS)</li>
	<li>Geolocation</li>
	<li>Calling other phones</li>
	<li>Connecting to WiFi</li>
</ul>
<h3>The Idea: Using URI Schemes</h3>
Since browsers can already launch default email clients via a simple <code>mailto</code> URL (browsers have supported URI schemes like these for years), could the same technique be used to offer in-app functionality for other products that have non-native URI schemes and that a QR reader wouldn’t support by default?

The answer is yes!

If the application supported the scheme, and if the user had the app the QR represented installed, it would work beautifully — and it wouldn’t matter which QR-code-reader was used.
<h4>The Possibilities</h4>
Here’s a list of some cool things that are possible:
<ul>
	<li><strong>Launching native Apple apps</strong> (Mail, Phone, FaceTime, Text, Map, YouTube and iTunes)</li>
	<li><strong>Running JavaScript bookmarklets</strong></li>
	<li><strong>Opening certain IM clients</strong> (Skype, AIM, MSN, GTalk, ICQ and Yahoo)</li>
	<li><strong>Opening special applications</strong> (IRC tools, feed readers, FTP clients and SVN repositories)</li>
	<li><strong>Opening any application that registers a URI scheme</strong> when it installs on a platform</li>
</ul>
What makes this particular technique so amazing is that it doesn’t rely on the QR-code reader being very advanced; all it needs is for the app creator (be it Skype, Evernote or Angry Birds) you want to launch and interface with to use the system development API to register a URI scheme.

In the case of Apple, it’s the Cocoa Touch OpenURL method of the shared UIApplication object, and for other platforms (like Android), there will be an equivalent somewhere in the documentation.

<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/044e5__0249-03_qr_google_chrome_iphone.png" alt="" width="550" height="179" /><span class="figure-caption">From scanner to browser to application — the possibilities are endless!</span>

What does this mean for us? As it stands, there are actually quite a number of applications for the desktop (as well as mobile), which already use URI schemes.

Take Skype, for instance. Do you want people to be able to capture a QR code that causes their phones to call you via Skype on their handsets? That can be done (at least on iOS) right now.

It can also be used to run several native apps, launch JavaScript bookmarklets (perhaps including apps that run within browsers) and access the usual FTP and IRC protocols (if associated with something).

Here are some useful links for developers:
<ul>
	<li><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URI_scheme" target="_blank">Overview of Existing URI Schemes</a></li>
	<li><a href="http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/iPhoneURLScheme_Reference/Introduction/Introduction.html" target="_blank">Apple iPhone URI Scheme Reference</a></li>
	<li><a href="http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3471503/how-to-listen-for-a-custom-uri" target="_blank">Android Custom URI Scheme Code</a></li>
</ul>
Now that you know a bit more about QR codes and have gotten a brief overview of things you need to know to get started, I’ll outline the steps to the technique below.

<strong>Note:</strong> The technique I’ll be describing below can even be used to execute JavaScript code, so under the wrong set of code-writing fingers, this could be exploited.
<h3>Step 1: Choose the Response You Want to Perform</h3>
First, decide what you’d like the QR code to accomplish. Obviously, you can use the regular QR-code generator stuff — like sending text messages to phones or sending emails — but let’s try something trickier.

We’ll create a Skype QR code that will automatically launch the app and make a voice call to a Skype contact. (This will only work if the user that scans the QR code has Skype installed).
<h3>Step 2: Create a URL Using a URL-shortening Service</h3>
Many QR-code generators suffer from a particular problem: if you try to put a <code>mailto</code> or other non-<code>http</code> link into them, they sometimes think that an error occurred (this also affects some reader apps).

This, of course, won’t get our Skype launcher anywhere near being cross-QR-code-reader-compatible, so we need another solution — and, luckily, a common one exists that can help get this URL into the browser (and help web developers monitor click stats too)!

<strong>We’re going to use a URL-shortening service.</strong> These services are rarely fussy about what you insert into them, and they push out well-formed URLs with the HTTP header required for best-possible compatibility (most QR readers know how to open basic URLs).

<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/044e5__0249-05_make_tinyurl.png" alt="" width="550" height="138" /><span class="figure-caption">A URL-shortening service such as <a href="http://tinyurl.com/" target="_blank">TinyURL</a> will turn that unconventional URL into a generally acceptable one.</span>

For this QR, we’ll call the Skype contact named <em>echo123</em> — this contact is the free voice-quality testing contact that Skype offers.

For our URL-shortening service, I’ll use <a href="http://tinyurl.com/" target="_blank">TinyURL</a>, but you can use one of the many other URL-shortening services out there such as <a href="https://bitly.com/" target="_blank">bitly</a>, <a href="http://is.gd/" target="_blank">is.gd</a> and so on.

Just enter your chosen URI scheme into the shortener.

This is the result of my TinyURL link conversion:
<table width="550" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td width="39"><strong>URL</strong></td>
<td width="509"><code>skype:echo123?call</code></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><strong>To</strong></td>
<td><a href="http://tinyurl.com/echo123skype" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/echo123skype</a></td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
If you click on the URL above, you might see something like the following (if you’re using Google Chrome on Windows):

<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/044e5__0249-09_qrcode_warning.png" alt="" width="442" height="292" />
<h3>Step 3: Generate the QR Code</h3>
Now take that generated URL — which will actually work if you have the desktop version of Skype installed for Windows or Mac — and generate a working QR code from it.

Check that the shortened URL works in your web browser; the link should launch Skype.

There is an abundance of choice when it comes to ways of generating QR codes; free tools exist all over the Web.

Below are a couple of free generators:
<ul>
	<li><a href="http://www.qrstuff.com/" target="_blank">QR Stuff</a> (online tool)</li>
	<li><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/qrencoder/id452695239?mt=12" target="_blank">QREncoder</a> (Mac App)</li>
</ul>
<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/044e5__0249-06_qrencoder.png" alt="" width="550" height="323" />

After you’ve generated your QR code, test it. Download one of the available applications for your mobile device (if you don’t already have one) and take a snapshot of the QR code you’ve produced.

Below are some free QR-reader products for mobile platforms:
<ul>
	<li><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/scan/id411206394?mt=8" target="_blank">Scan</a> (iOS)</li>
	<li><a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=la.droid.qr&amp;hl=en" target="_blank">QR Droid</a> (Android)</li>
	<li><a href="http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/13962" target="_blank">QR Code Scanner Pro</a> (Blackberry)</li>
</ul>
What should happen, if you followed the instructions correctly and if you’ve got the Skype app installed, is this:
<ol>
	<li>Your QR code will be identified by the QR reader app</li>
	<li>The QR reader app will notice that the QR code contains a URL (thus it will skip the compatibility quirks of the readers)</li>
	<li>The TinyURL link will open in the default browser</li>
	<li>It will redirect to the Skype-call URI scheme and launch Skype</li>
</ol>
Pretty amazing stuff for one clever image!

The only thing left to do with your wonderful creation is to upload it to the Web (as I have with the finished example below). I recommend, as a best practice, that you consider providing a link to the URL being snapped in the QR image itself (for desktop users).

Beyond that, you could spruce up your QR codes with a bit of color or some limited artwork if you’re feeling extra creative.
<h3>The Finished QR Code</h3>
<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/044e5__0249-08_finished_qr_code.png" alt="" width="550" height="225" />

The above QR code will call <em>echo123</em> on Skype if you have the app installed.
<h3>Conclusion</h3>
The power of this technique rests in the opportunity it gives designers and developers. A URI scheme exists between app developers and the browsers that support them (luckily, that’s all of them!).

Using a simple redirect (provided by you or a third party) and these already existing and well-supported features, you can launch applications, interact via query codes, execute JavaScript and do all sorts of wonderfully creative things.

QR codes are being increasingly adopted and have never been more widely used. With this single technique you can break past most existing limitations.

		<div class="post_preview">Author: Thoriq Firdaus at Naldz Graphics<a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Siri</a>is one of the greatest technology inventions in our age. The technology that once could only be seen in sci-fi movie now becomes a reality. We can do things like send a massage, scheduling, phone call and much more using voice command; even we can communicate like the way we talk to a person with Siri. Isn’t that really cool? So, this cool thing is really inspired us to make this tut. In this tut we are going to make the Siri icon. Just like our previous tutorials, we will make this icon as re-sizable as possible so you can adjust it to any size you want.
You need at least <strong><a href="http://naldzgraphics.net/photoshop-tutorial" rel="nofollow">Photoshop</a> CS3</strong>to follow this tutorial, if you’re already have one then let’s get started.
<h2>Final Result</h2>
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-icon-final.jpg" alt="Siri Icon Final" width="500" height="300" />
<h4>Step 1</h4>
As we have done previously in previous tutorials, we need to create our project file first and in this tut we create a new file <strong>(Ctrl+ N)</strong> with dimension of 400x300px (300dpi).
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step1.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 1" width="500" height="303" />
<h4>Step 2</h4>
We need a linen texture for the background which we can<a href="http://www.premiumpixels.com/freebies/apple-ios-linen-texture/" target="_blank"> download it here for free</a>. After downloading it, place the texture in the project file.
Next create a circle shape using <strong>Ellipse Tool (U)</strong> with diameter of 180px (more or less), name this shape “<strong>circle base</strong>”.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step2.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 2" width="500" height="380" />
<h4>Step 3</h4>
Now we add the circle some layer styles. These styles will make the circle looks like a metal.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step3.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 3" width="500" height="380" />
First, add a <strong>Gradient Overlay</strong> using <strong>Angle</strong> gradient style.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step3a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 3a" width="500" height="573" />
After that, add<strong> Inner Shadow</strong> style.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step3b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 3b" width="500" height="370" />
This is how the “<strong>circle base</strong>” is going to look like, after adding the styles above.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step3c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 3c" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 4</h4>
To make the circle base a bit more metal realistic, we will add some other details by copying the circle layer and convert it into <strong>Smart Object</strong>. Then, add these following layer Filters:
<h5>Step 4.1: Noise Filter</h5>
Go to <strong>Filter &gt; Noise &gt; Add Noise</strong> menu. Set the noise value to about <strong>10%</strong>.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step4.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 4" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 4.2: Radial Blur</h5>
Go to <strong>Filter &gt; Blur &gt; Radial Blur</strong> menu. Set the blur value to about 17 with Good quality.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step4a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 4a" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 4.3</h5>
Now select both circle and group (<strong>Ctrl/Cmd+G</strong>) them together, then create a circular selection by holding <strong>Ctrl/Cmd</strong> key and click one of the circle layer at the same time. After that, apply layer mask in the group.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step4b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 4b" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 4.4</h5>
Convert this group into <strong>Smart Object</strong> and add <strong>Drop Shadow</strong>.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step4c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 4c" width="500" height="370" />
And this is the end result would look like.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step4d.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 4d" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 5</h4>
In this step, create another circle shape that is slightly smaller than the first circle, we name this shape “<strong>circle (depth)</strong>” or name as you want. Then, add <strong>Inner Shadow</strong> on it.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step5.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 5" width="500" height="370" />

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step5a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 5a" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 6</h4>
In this step we will create another circle shape (again) using <strong>Ellipse Tool (U)</strong>, this circle is slightly smaller than the second one we have created before in Step 5, we name this layer <strong>circle (top)</strong> /<strong> top circle</strong>.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step6.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 6" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 6.1</h5>
Add some styles on this circle, like the first circle. So, in this step we repeat the same step we’ve done in <strong>Step 3-4</strong>.
And since the Gradient style that we are going to add to this circle is exactly the same as the first one, so we only do copy its style by right-click the “<strong>circle base</strong>” and select <strong>Copy Layer Styles</strong> then right-click the top circle layer and select <strong>Paste Layer Styles</strong>.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step6a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 6a" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 6.2</h5>
Duplicate this “<strong>top circle</strong>” layer and convert it to <strong>Smart Object</strong>, by right-click on the layer and select <strong>Convert to Smart Object</strong>. We rename this layer “<strong>top circle (textures)</strong>”
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step6b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 6b" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 6.3</h5>
Then, go to menu <strong>Filter &gt; Noise &gt; Add Noise</strong>, give about 10% for the noise value. After that, go to menu <strong>Filter &gt; Blur &gt; Radial Blur</strong>, and slide to 17 for the Blur amount.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step6c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 6c" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 6.4</h5>
(see no. 2) Select the two top circles, group <strong>(Cmd/Ctrl+G)</strong> them, hold <strong>Cmd/Ctrl</strong> key and click to one of the circle then apply layer mask on the group.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step6d.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 6d" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 6.5</h5>
Convert this group to <strong>Smart Object</strong> and add <strong>Drop Shadow</strong> on it.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step4c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 6" width="500" height="370" />
This is it, let’s take a look the result for a while.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step6e.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 6e" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 7</h4>
From this step, we are going to make the <strong>Microphone</strong>.
Firstly, we create the mic handler, and since we want this icon to be resizable we will make this mic handler in custom Shape.
Add a rectangular shape in our project file and remove the <a href="http://naldzgraphics.net/vectors" rel="nofollow">vector</a> mask from it. Set the layer Fill value 90%. This will help us to draw our microphone later. (<em>See the screenshot below</em>)
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step7.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 7" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 7.1</h5>
Now go to <strong>Paths</strong> tab (<em>this tab by default is in the right side of Channels tab</em>), and create a new path layer, the same by creating a new layer in the<strong> Layers</strong> tab
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step7a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 7a" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 8</h4>
Select <strong>Ellipse Tool (U)</strong> in the Toolbox, then change its mode to <strong>Paths</strong> &amp;<strong> Add to path area (+)</strong> from the Tool Options Box (<em>see the screenshot below</em>).
Create a circle path with a diameter of about 60px.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step8.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 8" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 8.1</h5>
Now change the <strong>Ellipse Tool</strong> mode to<strong> Subtract to path area (-</strong>). Create another circle the is slightly smaller than the previous one (Est. 45px diameter). Align these circles path to be centered both vertically and horizontally.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step8a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 8a" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 8.2</h5>
In this step, select<strong> Rectangle Tool (U)</strong> in the toolbox. Keep the mode to <strong>Path</strong> and <strong>Add to path area (+)</strong> in the Tool Options Box.
Then create four rectangular paths as seen on the following screenshot.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step8b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 8b" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 8.3</h5>
Still with the <strong>Rectangle Tool (U)</strong>, now change its mode to <strong>Subtract to path area (-)</strong>.
Then create another rectangle shape, place it between the two (No. 1 &amp; 2) rectangular shapes we’ve created before. (<em>See the screenshot</em>)
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step8c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 8c" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 8.4</h5>
We’ve done <a href="http://naldzgraphics.net/drawing" rel="nofollow">drawing</a> our path, and then we make this path into a custom Shape, so that we can select it through Shape library.
Go to <strong>Edit &gt; Define Custom Shape</strong>, name the shape to mic handler and click OK. After that, we go to Tool Options Box and
make sure you have selected <strong>Custom Shape Tool (U)</strong>, in the Toolbox. Our custom shape should now be in the Shape Library.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step8d.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 8d" width="500" height="370" />
Select our custom shape, and create one.
<h4>Step 9</h4>
It’s time to add some Layer styles on it. Start by adding <strong>Inner Shadow</strong>.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step9.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 9" width="500" height="370" />
And <strong>Gradient Overlay</strong>

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step9b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 9b" width="500" height="370" />

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step9a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 9a" width="500" height="370" />
OK, now let’s take a look the result.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step9c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 9c" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 10</h4>
After creating the handler now it’s time to make the head. Select <strong>Rounded Rectangle Tool (U)</strong> in the Toolbox, change its mode to Shape layers in the Tool Options Box, and set its radius to 25%.
Create one, and place it above the mic handler.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step10.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 10" width="500" height="370" />
Then, we add <strong>Inner Shadow</strong> on it.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step10a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 10a" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 10.1</h5>
To add the details in the mic head, create another rounded with 25px rounded radius that is slightly smaller from the previous one.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step10b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 10b" width="500" height="370" />
Then let’s add some layer styles for the details.
Add <strong>Drop Shadow</strong>

&nbsp;

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step10c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 10c" width="500" height="370" />

And <strong>Inner Glow</strong>, change the Glow color to white (<strong>#FFFFFF</strong>) with 35% opacity.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step10d.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 10d" width="500" height="370" />
Then we add <strong>Gradient Overlay</strong>, with color gradation from <strong>#220033</strong> to <strong>#FFFFFF</strong>.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step10e.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 10e" width="500" height="370" />

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step10f.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 10f" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 11</h4>
Next we will create a (sort of) dotted texture that we typically saw in a microphone.
First create another new file <strong>(Cmd/Ctrl+N</strong>), with size of 30 by 30 px.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step11.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 11" width="500" height="370" />
<h3>Step 11.1</h3>
Create a circle Shape layer in the new document, Fill with white color. Then go to <strong>Edi</strong>t menu and select <strong>Define Pattern</strong>.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step11a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 11a" width="500" height="370" />
<h3>Step 12</h3>
Then add<strong> Pattern Overlay</strong> on it, now our new pattern should be included in pattern library. Scale the patter 12% and change the blend mode to Overlay.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step12.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 12" width="500" height="370" />
Let’s take a look the result for a while.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step12a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 12a" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 13</h4>
Next, we will make a glowing effect on the mic head. Create a circle shape, place in the center (see the screenshot), and set the layer Fill value to 0%.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step13.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 13" width="500" height="370" />
Add <strong>Radial Gradient Overlay</strong> with color gradation from <strong>#FFFFFF</strong> to <strong>transparent</strong>, then right-click this layer and select <strong>Create Clipping Mask</strong>.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step13a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 13a" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 14</h4>
In this step we create the shine effect on the mic head. Well, most of Apple-made icon is always shining.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step14.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 14" width="500" height="370" />
So create a white rounded rectangle (again), set 0% in its layer Fill.
Add Gradient Overlay from white (<strong>#FFFFFF</strong>) to <strong>transparent</strong>.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step14a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 14a" width="500" height="370" />
<h3>Step 14.1</h3>
Next, create a (sort of) parallelogram selection, on the layer and apply a layer masking on it.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step14c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 14c" width="500" height="370" />
The final appearance of the shape should now look like this:

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step14d.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 14d" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 15</h4>
When Siri are processing your conversation. Siri turning on a spinning light that indicates the loading.
So, in this step we will create this light loading indicator effect.
First, create a circle shape layer using <strong>Ellipse Tool (U)</strong> this circle has the same size of circle depth layer.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step15.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 15" width="500" height="370" />
Next, add <strong>Gradient Overlay</strong> from <strong>#D73FDD</strong> to <strong>transparent</strong>.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step15a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 15a" width="500" height="370" />
Duplicate this layer.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step15b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 15b" width="500" height="370" />
Then, adjust its gradient setting.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step15c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 15c" width="500" height="370" />

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step15d.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 15d" width="500" height="370" />
Now let’s see the result for a while.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step15e.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 15e" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 16</h4>
We are almost done here. But we need to add last detail on it. So, In this step we are going to create a bright sort of meteor-like light effect on this light-loading-indicator.
First, create a Rectangle shape, remove its vector mask then set its Fill value 80%. In the Paths tab, create a new path layer.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step16.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 16" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 16.1</h5>
Remember how to create a custom shape we’ve done in Step 8? We will do the same steps here.
Select <strong>Ellipse Tool (U)</strong> in the toolbox and in the Tool Options Box change its mode to Paths. Create a circle shape layer, which is slightly smaller than the depth circle layer.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step16a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 16a" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 16.2</h5>
Now create another smaller circle path this time change the pat mode to <strong>Subtract from path area (-)</strong> then align it at the bottom left of the previous circle. (<em>See the screenshot below</em>)
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step16b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 16b" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 16.3</h5>
In this step, select <strong>Rectangle Tool (U)</strong>, keep its mode to <strong>Subtract from path area (-)</strong> and create two rectangles as seen on the following screenshot. These rectangles will trim the circles half to the right and to the bottom.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step16c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 16c" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 16.4</h5>
Now and again select <strong>Ellipse Tool (U)</strong> in the Toolbox, draw a circle path right between the two circles with <strong>Add to path area (+)</strong> mode.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step16d.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 16d" width="500" height="370" />
<h5>Step 16.5</h5>
Go to <strong>Edit</strong> menu and select <strong>Define Custom Shape</strong>, let’s name it meteor, well, you can always name it that suit your style, this name is just optional.
Next, select <strong>Custom Shape Tool (U)</strong> in the toolbox and select our just made custom shape then draw it between the two circles.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step16e.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 16e" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 17</h4>
Now let’s style this custom shape by adding <strong>Outer Glow</strong>, change glow color to <strong>#DA68DE </strong>
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step17.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 17" width="500" height="370" />
and <strong>Gradient Overlay</strong> with color gradation from <strong>#da68de</strong> to white.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step17a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 17a" width="500" height="370" />
Convert this layer to <strong>Smart Object</strong> and go to <strong>Filter &gt; Blur</strong> menu, and then select <strong>Gaussian Blur</strong>.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step17b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 17b" width="500" height="370" />

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step17c.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 17c" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 18</h4>
OK, that’s a long process you may take a break for while if you need to. But we haven’t yet done with the light effect.
In this step create a circle using <strong>Ellipse Tool (U)</strong> above our “meteor”.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step18.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 18" width="500" height="370" />
Change the layer fill to 0% and add white-to-transparent <strong>Radial Gradient</strong>. After that right click the circle base layer to create a circle selection and apply <strong>Layer mask</strong>.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step18a.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 18a" width="500" height="370" />
OK we have approached in the last step of our tutorial. The following is the final outcome of our Siri icon. Let’s take a look.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step18b.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 18b" width="500" height="370" />
<h4>Step 19: Additional</h4>
And technically we have done creating our Siri icon. But here I’m going to add some additional layer and element.
First I add a rectangle shape full size of the file dimension above all the layers. Add radial gradient on it with Overlay blend mode and 35% opacity.
<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-step19.jpg" alt="Siri Icon - Step 19" width="500" height="370" />
Place the icon slight to left and we write “How can I help you?” in the right side with drop shadow layer style.
This is it, the final outcome of our tutorial.

<img src="http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2011/12/siri-icon-final.jpg" alt="Siri Icon Final" width="500" height="300" />
<h4><a href="http://naldzgraphics.net/download" rel="nofollow">Download</a> Source File</h4>
<ul>
	<li><a href="http://downloads.naldzgraphics.net/downloads/siri-icon.zip">Siri-Icon</a></li>
</ul>
<h4>Summary</h4>
We have through a long process to make this icon, and in summary, we have learn some techniques from this tutorial like:
<ul>
	<li>Creating a quick custom shape.</li>
	<li>Creating a quick custom pattern.</li>
	<li>Creating metal-like &amp; light effect.</li>
	<li>Etc.</li>
</ul>
We won’t just stop here, as we are currently setting up the next tut to complement our <a href="http://naldzgraphics.net/icons" rel="nofollow">icons</a> and here is the sneak peek of our next tut:

		<br/>
		Blogs have become the next generation of social media in the past several years. While they used to be a minor part of sharing content and were vastly overshadowed by official sites, they now provide more than anyone ever thought possible. Not only are they an affordable and efficient way of gaining readers but being fully customizable and made for updating makes them simpler to run than the old website standards.

While they have stayed the same but with expanding popularity and features, there is a third-party that creates a larger impact. That would be the creation and wide acceptance of personal devices with Internet capabilities. The most recent releases in the world of tablets are especially pressing, such as with the ever-loved iPad still selling like hotcakes.

Because of this, it is wise to make sure your own blog is made to be iPad (or any <a href="http://crenk.com/free-safari-alternatives-for-ipad/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">alternative</a>) friendly. You would be surprised at the number of people who use an iPad to browse blogs, such as on train rides, flights, office waits, on breaks and during lunch. These tips can help you make sure your blog is prepared for tablet users:
<h2 class="underLineTitle">Use Application Onswipe</h2>
<h2><img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/fb3eb__ipad-friendly-01.jpg" alt="Onswipe" width="540" height="364" /></h2>
With tablets becoming so popular, there have been companies that have teamed up to create applications that are designed to automatically adjust certain display settings and functions. <a href="http://onswipe.com/wordpress" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Onswipe</a> is one of those companies.

This plug-in works by adjusting things like screen size, position and other factors to allow for viewing on a touchscreen. It is coded within the blog itself so that tablet users won’t have to install anything to enjoy your content. But if you have WordPress, it is already included in the blog itself and fully activated.

Beyond making adjustments, Onswipe also makes it easier to save blogs; creates a gorgeous, full-page, magazine-like cover from the latest article; and makes sharing on social media sites a breeze.
<h2 class="underLineTitle">Turn Your Blog Into an eBook</h2>
<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/fb3eb__ipad-friendly-02.jpg" alt="Anthologize" width="540" height="323" />

If your website is niche-specific it might be worth it to look into turning it into an electronic. The iPad and other tablets work as e-readers, which makes them perfect for PDFs and other files that work as ebooks. There are several ways that you can do this, such as just backing up files and then fixing them into the correct order yourself. But some programs will make it much easier.
<h3 class="subTitHd"><a href="http://anthologize.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Anthologize</a></h3>
If you are a WordPress user you will be able to take advantage of Anthologize, the most popular and extensive conversion tool on the web. It works as a plug-in, which is why it is unusable by anyone who goes through any other blog program or hosts independently. The format is easy to use: Just pull the content from your blogs through the plug-in, drag and drop it into the right order and then convert.
<h3 class="subTitHd"><a href="http://www.zinepal.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Zinepal</a></h3>
If you don’t have WordPress then you should check out Zinepal. It works by letting you connect through your blog and then select what stories you want to include in your file. All it requires is the URL of your blog, and it will let you easily sift through posts to find the ones you want, without having to cut and paste. You can then convert it into Kindle, PDS or ePub formats.
<h2 class="underLineTitle">Use a Mobile-Friendly Theme</h2>
<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/e8c91__ipad-friendly-03.jpg" alt="Mobile-Friendly Theme" width="500" height="484" />

If you have WordPress you will be given several options for <a href="http://pelfusion.com/wordpress/14-best-premium-wordpress-themes-of-april-2011/" target="_blank">themes</a> that have been made to make it easier for those who are using devices to browse. If you are through another source you can find others for your particular setup easily enough. But for WP users, here are three of the best:
<h3 class="subTitHd"><a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mobile-pack/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">WordPress Mobile Pack</a></h3>
This is a complete toolkit rather than just a theme, with a collection of plug-ins meant to properly <a href="http://pelfusion.com/know-how/how-to-create-or-convert-website-into-mobile-format/" target="_blank">customize your blog to be mobile compatible</a>. It comes with a switcher that will suggest either computer or mobile settings, both standard and advanced themes, a mobile ad widget, a mobile admin panel, device adaption, custom colors, a barcode widget, auto listing and more. It’s also recently been updated to an improved person.
<h3 class="subTitHd"><a href="http://pelfusion.com/refer/wptouch" target="_blank">Wptouch</a></h3>
This plug-in was created for seamless blog adaption from a standard WP site to an iPhone or iPad application. It allows for a switch between the mobile theme or the standard computer theme based on the choice of the user while providing Ajax loading for all content. A paid version has a ton more features, colors and customizable options for the theme.

<img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/e8c91__ipad-friendly-websites.jpg" alt="Wordpress to Mobile Version" />

		<br/>
		Lately, I've been <a title="HTML5 data-* attributes are great and you know it" href="http://www.marcofolio.net/webdesign/html5_data-_attributes_are_great_and_you_know_it.html" target="_blank">messing around</a> <a title="Working with Websockets " href="http://www.marcofolio.net/webdesign/working_with_websockets.html" target="_blank">with cool</a> <a title="Lights Off - A puzzle game using HTML5 canvas" href="http://www.marcofolio.net/webdesign/lights_off_a_puzzle_game_using_html5_canvas.html" target="_blank">HTML5 stuff</a> a lot. One of the things that HTML5 is trying to reach, is the market of <strong>mobile devices</strong>. A long time ago (when I got my first iPhone), I wrote an article on <a title="Add a webclip icon for easy iPhone access" href="http://www.marcofolio.net/webdesign/add_a_webclip_icon_for_easy_iphone_access.html" target="_blank">how to add a webclip</a> for easy access to your website. But since then, I've learned a couple of more things on <strong>how to build native-looking apps for iOS using only HTML</strong>.
<div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/0fa15__ios_native.png" alt="iOS HTML Template" /></div>
I've created a template/boilerplate that you can use for your next project to create native looking apps for <a title="Apple iOS" href="http://www.apple.com/ios/" target="_blank">iOS</a> (more specifically: <a title="Mobile Safari" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_%28web_browser%29" target="_blank">Mobile Safari</a>) using nothing but HTML. Simply build your website starting with this template, bookmark it and you're done.

View or download the source code and read <a title="Making comments in your source code" href="http://www.marcofolio.net/tips/making_comments_in_your_source_code.html" target="_blank">the comments</a> carefully to see what's needed to create a native looking app using only HTML.
<div style="text-align: center;"><a title="Demo iOS HTML Template" href="http://demo.marcofolio.net/native_ios_app/" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/0cf22__demo.png" alt="Demo iOS HTML Template" /></a>
<a title="Download iOS HTML Template" href="http://www.marcofolio.net/downloads/webdesign/ios_html_template/download.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/0cf22__download.png" alt="Download iOS HTML Template" /></a></div>
If you don't feel like fully digging into the source, but learn the pieces bit by bit, feel free to read on further. Take note that this will only work when the user <strong>bookmarks</strong> your webpage. The changes to any existing projects can be made easily, just make the following changes in the <code>head</code> section of your page and you're ready to go!

		<br/>
		Now we can’t imagine life without computers in our bags and smartphones in our pockets. Humans have now become ‘obsessed’ with connectivity. But how do we keep our gadgets and devices organized? How do we manage both our business and personal data across devices?

This is when today’s ‘hottest’ service in technology comes in. Cloud computing is a service whereby shared resources, data, and software are provided to computers and other devices over a network, usually via the internet. Apple’s version is the iCloud, which upon its introduction has replaced Apple’s MobileMe. Apple iCloud was introduced by Steve Jobs during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June of 2011–an event that announced the OS X Lion and the iOS 5 for the iPod, iPhone and the iPad.

&nbsp;
<h2>iCloud in a Nutshell</h2>

<hr style="margin-left: 20px;" align="left" width="60%" />

iCloud, simply put, is a hard drive in the sky. It allows you to quickly access your data from your devices: Macbook, PC, iPhone, iPod and iPad. This data can be anything and everything you can think of: your music, applications, contacts and photos across all your devices. As long as you are connected, you can access your important images and documents when you’re on the go.
<div id="attachment_59393" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 580px;"><a href="http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/30796/icloud/" target="_blank"><img class="size-full wp-image-59393" title="icloud-invisible-synching" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/33bdf__icloud-invisible-synching.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="494" /></a>
<p class="wp-caption-text">Image from Lets Go Ditigal</p>

</div>
Cloud storage is not a new concept. It has been around for a while, but since iCloud’s introduction it has become a growing tech trend. Through cloud computing, cloud storage provides password-protected access to your online storage space. Cloud storage can be used as additional space and a back up copy of your hard drive. Moreover, it is an effective way to make the files available to your other gadgets and devices.

iCloud is not the first online storage service by Apple. MobileMe preceded iCloud, and offered synchronization services at an annual fee. MobileMe was created to ensure synchronization of data between all devices–including e-mails, calendars, contacts, photos, and iWeb and iDisk services. Apple then revamped MobileMe, merging its features with their newly offered Apple iCloud service. Since then iCloud has replaced MobileMe, with more features and more flexibility.

Like MobileMe, the biggest advantage of iCloud is its Apple software integration. This makes the iCloud the most practical cloud storage choice, especially if you own mostly Apple products: Macbook, iPod, iPad, iTouch, the like. It ensures that all data is continuously synchronized while connected to the internet. The iCloud can even include Apple devices owned by your family members and household, too.

The iCloud is now available to all Mac devices in the iOS 5 operating system, and Macs with the OS X Lion operating system. iCloud is free and comes with all the new devices. After getting an account for iCloud, you get 5 gigabytes worth of storage, for free. iCloud backups happen when you’re not using the device.
<h2>But, is iCloud Ready for Us?</h2>

<hr style="margin-left: 20px;" align="left" width="60%" />

iCloud does not offer the option to stream your music and videos from the cloud (as of writing). It would’ve been great if users could have the option to play the media content directly instead of the need to download it first. Partial backups are made while you are sleeping, and changes include personal device settings, text messages, ring tones, app data, e-books, videos and apps you bought from iTunes. In addition, backups are done automatically in case you upgrade your OS or new hardware.

iCloud still isn’t perfect, though. One example: iCloud users are limited to the software designed to access that particular cloud. iCloud service is available as long as you have internet access, but still requires an application to manage and synchronize the connection to your data.

<a href="http://www.designerbooster.com/?attachment_id=59399" rel="attachment wp-att-59399" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59399" title="photo-stream-app-cloud" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/33bdf__photo-stream-app-cloud.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="389" /></a>

The Photo Stream still has many flaws. iCloud only syncs and spreads photos taken during the past 30 days. Which is annoying especially if you want to look at pictures from more than the past 30 days–maybe you want to show off your daughter’s graduation months ago or remember last year’s family reunion. It can be an inconvenience that Photo Stream doesn’t have this option. Aside from that, you can’t delete anything off the Photo Stream–just hope you do not sync any embarrassing or scandalous photos accidentally.

The first 5 GB is free, but if the free storage space is no longer sufficient, you can get iCloud storage plans at $ 20 a year (15 GB), $ 40 a year (25 GB) and $ 100 a year (55 GB).

There are still some flaws and gaps here and there. it’s limited in features, but still quite convenient to use. It’s useful, fantastic as a free back up service but not yet worth the money for a storage plan. The big ‘boom’ moment for Apple didn’t come with the iCloud yet.
<h2>Other iCloud Alternatives</h2>

<hr style="margin-left: 20px;" align="left" width="60%" />

<h4><a href="http://box.com" target="_blank"><strong>Box.com
</strong></a><strong><a href="http://www.designerbooster.com/?attachment_id=59385" rel="attachment wp-att-59385" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59385" title="box-cloud-storage-plan" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/33bdf__box-cloud-storage-plan1.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="364" /></a></strong></h4>
One of its most promising features is its recent availability to the iOS; making it a good contender as Apple’s main competitor. While iCloud boasts in keeping your apps, photos, music and videos in place, it is certainly flawed in sharing documents with others. Box on the other hand, is a champ and it even comes with the Google Docs integration.Upon downloading and signing up, you get a whooping 50 GB of free storage space–now compare that to iCloud’s meager 5 GB. Moreover, Box allows you to stream photos and music from the cloud to the AppleTv via Airplay. It cannot accept bigger uploads more than 100 mb– but at a staggering 50 GB of free storage, we’re not complaining at all.
<h4><a href="https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/learnmore" target="_blank"><strong>Amazon Cloud Driver</strong></a>
<a href="http://www.designerbooster.com/?attachment_id=59386" rel="attachment wp-att-59386" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59386" title="amazon-cloud-drive-5-gb" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/33bdf__amazon-cloud-drive-5-gb.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="397" /></a></h4>
The Amazon Cloud Driver is similar to the iCloud in terms of services and purchasing content. However, the former is more indiscriminate in a particular OS, so it does well on both Mac and PC but it doesn’t have the deep OS integration iCloud offers on the Mac and iOS systems. After sign up you get 5 GB of free storage. If you need more space, Amazon offers storage plans at 20 GB to 1000 GB. Now, you don’t have to worry about losing your files if your hard drive crashes, or gets lost or stolen.
<h4><strong><a href="https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTQ4ODA2MjU0OQ?src=referrals_twitter9" target="_blank">
Dropbox</a></strong></h4>
<a href="http://www.designerbooster.com/?attachment_id=59387" rel="attachment wp-att-59387" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59387" title="dropbox-cloud-sync-devices" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/33bdf__dropbox-cloud-sync-devices.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="415" /></a>

Dropbox does not offer iCloud’s deep Mac OS integration, but is compatible with the Mac, Windows, Linux and all major devices the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android phones. Dropbox offers 2 GB free storage space upon signing up. It offers storage plans up to 100 GB for subscriptions. Unlike the iCloud, all types of stored files will be counted against your total storage space limit.
<h4><strong><a href="https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&amp;rpsnv=11&amp;ct=1321973629&amp;rver=6.1.6206.0&amp;wp=MBI_SSL_SHARED&amp;wreply=https:%2F%2Fskydrive.live.com%2F&amp;lc=1033&amp;id=250206&amp;mkt=en-US&amp;cbcxt=sky" target="_blank">SkyDrive</a></strong></h4>
<a href="http://www.designerbooster.com/?attachment_id=59388" rel="attachment wp-att-59388" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59388" title="skydrive-windows-integration" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/33bdf__skydrive-windows-integration.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="316" /></a>

This is Microsoft’s version of the iCloud, but designed more to sharing documents, photos and videos between multiple users.SkyDrive offers free storage for up to 25 GB. SkyDrive offers integration with Microsoft products, just as iCloud is with Apple.

Apple’s mobile operating system has gained a huge following in just a few short years. Although it can take months of dedicated study to even begin programming iOS apps, there still seems to be a solid market of intelligent developers. In the last year alone we’ve witnessed the iPad2 and iPhone 4S releases which have both appeared stunning.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/luca_79/6322138250/" target="_blank"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2cc80__iphone-4s-white-display.jpg" alt="iPhone 4S White model" /></a>

And along with these advances in technology comes a much larger demand for iOS apps. I’d like to go into a few design trends which have become prevalent in mainstream iOS interfaces. Designers have started following innovative and whimsical methods for constructing beautiful app layouts. And there is a lot to be said of this booming mobile industry!
<h3>Offset Center Tab Button</h3>
Surprisingly I have run into this feature a lot more in the social network-type applications. The offset tab button is generally placed in the center of a series of tab views in the bottom bar. Foursquare and Instagram are two examples, although there are other designers picking up on the trend.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__instagram-tab-bar.jpg" alt="Instagram iOS app tab bar" />

The benefit of this tactic from a metrics perspective is that you’ll see a lot more active sharing using that center button. With Instagram you tap there to snap a new photo, in Foursquare you are sharing a new check-in. This center tab view should represent the key action(s) you’re hoping to get out of each user.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__tumblr-tabs.jpg" alt="Offset iOS UI tab design from Tumblr" />

Another cool example can be found in Tumblr’s iOS app. This mobile port of the social blogosphere is using the offset center tab just a few pixels in height. It seems like a small effect, yet your attention is constantly attracted to the “Post” link.
<h3>Popup Modal Views</h3>
Modal boxes have been popular in both desktop and browser-based applications. When developing for iOS these modal boxes are perfect for quickly gathering some user information. These systems work best in a true/false or yes/no format so the user isn’t flustered in dealing with a whole new window.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__tweetbot-spam-report-modal-window.jpg" alt="Tweetbot modal popup box" />

In the example above Tweetbot uses a brilliant modal box design with an outer shadow effect. Another point of notice is how the two buttons have been colored differently – this is to imply that you need to make a choice between the two. In this screen I’m being asked to confirm or deny a spam report(which I politely canceled!).
<h3>Link Icons</h3>
When designing an iOS user interface you want important bits to stand out from the rest. This is worth stressing in preparation so that your layout doesn’t appear bland by design. Things for iPhone uses some really unique icons to label each of their different scheduling areas.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__things-for-iphone.jpg" alt="Things for iPhone and iPod Touch" />

Another one of my favorite examples is Cloudette, an iOS solution for CloudApp. Basically you log in to your account and the home screen displays all your contents in chronological order. The app includes icons next to each file based on the type(URL link, photo, .zip archive).

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__cloudette-sampling-lists-view.jpg" alt="Cloudette icon design list" />

Even if you aren’t a magnificent designer you should be able to find some awesome freebies throughout the web. Having a few icons sprinkled throughout your menus will help to differentiate the many links listed together. They also add onto the beautiful user experience which you would expect in any mobile app.
<h3>User Profile Badges</h3>
The most popular example of the social badges group has to be Foursquare. We’ve all caught a glimpse of these badge designs and there are plenty to go around! The site’s founder <a href="https://foursquare.com/dens/badges/all" target="_blank">Dennis Crowley</a> has actually collected over 100 different badges! Talk about some real dedication.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__foursquare-badges-display-case.jpg" alt="Foursquare display badges - trophy case" />

Adding this functionality into your app brings about an entire gaming mechanism. Your members will be constantly working to unlock badges and show off their hip trendy profile. <a href="http://imga.me/" target="_blank">Im Game</a> is another app released in private beta where you check-in to each video game as you play them.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__imgame-tokens-badges.jpg" alt="Private beta iOS ImGa.me app" />

Users who check into specific genres more often can unlock secret badges, along with others means of social gaming. If the badge system doesn’t work in your app I suggest not trying to force it. But collecting user input will keep your member base growing and interested in future products!
<h3>Custom Loading Animation</h3>
This hasn’t been as popularized as the other trends recently, although there are 2 apps worth noticing. Gowalla’s newest re-design uses a checkered array of moving colors to display when content is being loaded. It’s a really unique animation and certainly along the lines of something I’ve never seen before.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__gowalla-loader-checkers.jpg" alt="Gowalla loader animation box" />

Another great example comes from Kevin Rose’s recent publication of <a href="http://www.oink.com/" target="_blank">Oink app</a>. The user interface is much smaller this time around, as they focus on a tiny loading bar towards the top of each screen. The animation movement is very fluid and I feel the concept has been implemented brilliantly. Take down a few notes from these guys and see if you can come up with your own unique loader.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__oink-ios-app-loading-bar.jpg" alt="Oink iOS loader bar animation" />
<h3>Pre-Cropped Images</h3>
There is a lot more code required to dynamically pull out images of differing sizes. It takes even more programming to crop and maneuver user uploaded content. As such these trends are still limited to app development teams with enough time and patience to implement them.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3448" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/c1ae6__ballin-dribbble-app.jpg" alt="Ballin' Dribbble app view screen" />

Ballin’ is a great example which pulls data out of Dribbble’s network. The shots are updated usually every 24 hours to include both a thumbnail and full-screen view for when the iPhone is in landscape mode. Altogether this technique is more intensive in programming than actual design. Yet it appears very trendy and flashy, and certainly something which I expect to continue in future mobile apps of 2012.
<h3>Conclusion</h3>
This guide has introduced some of the latest design trends in iPhone/iPad applications. If you’re an aspiring designer I highly recommend skimming through my previous article on <a href="http://webdesignledger.com/tips/getting-started-in-ios-user-interface-design" target="_blank">iOS user interfaces</a> in Photoshop. There is a lot to study and practice, but the payoff is certainly worth the effort. If you have any questions or comments please share with us in the discussion area below.

		Until back a few years ago, creating you own social network with a small budget was virtually impossible. This market was available only for large players like Facebook and MySpace, and that because the development of a social networking platform implies a vast amount of knowledge and resources.

<img title="Boonex Header" src="http://maxcdn.crazyleafdesign.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/boonex-header.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="68" />

All that changed when Boonex released Dolphin. Dolphin was an open source social networking that worked right “out of the box”. You just needed to install and configure it and that was it … you had a social network.

In recent years the mobile market experienced a boom initiated by the release of the iPhone, iOS and the “app-driven mobile experience” and that meant a new world opened for developers and entrepreneurs. The <a href="http://www.boonex.com/mobile">mobile social networking apps</a> market is still its early days and that is why Boonex released Boonex mobile, a <a href="http://www.boonex.com/mobile">mobile social networking software</a>.

<img title="Boonex Mobile" src="http://maxcdn.crazyleafdesign.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/boonex-mobile-screens.jpg" alt="Boonex Mobile" width="275" height="631" />

BoonEx is the only company in the industry to offer open-source applications for both iPhone and Android that you can rebrand, customize and submit to app stores as your own. <a href="http://www.boonex.com/mobile">BoonEx Mobile Apps</a> are closely integrated with Dolphin and offer a unique platform for expanding your social network reach to the mobile devices of your site’s members.

The iOS and Android apps are nearly identical in terms of looks and functionality. A great thing about both apps is that, being open-source, you can modify them, add functionality, change the design and UI, add extra modules and more.

Some of the features available in both apps are :
<ul>
	<li>homepage with alerts</li>
	<li>member profiles and friends browsing</li>
	<li>sending/receiving site messages (Mailbox)</li>
	<li>photos upload from device libraries</li>
	<li>photos upload straight from camera</li>
	<li>member photos browsing</li>
	<li>full-screen photos viewer with auto-rotation</li>
	<li>member videos browsing and playback</li>
	<li>member music browsing and playback</li>
	<li>connection to multiple Dolphin-based sites</li>
	<li>remembering login info for multiple sites</li>
	<li>instant status message updates</li>
	<li>GPS-based location updates</li>
	<li>friendship requests accepting/declining</li>
	<li>location-based and keyword-based search</li>
	<li>multilingual interface</li>
</ul>
<a href="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/boonex-mobile-app.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2395" title="boonex-mobile-app" src="http://www.designerbooster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/boonex-mobile-app.png" alt="" width="320" height="480" /></a>

On the usability and reliability side, in our experience with the apps these have proven to be very strong and easy to use. The speed was good even on the 3GS model, and both performed great on the latest versions of the iOS and Android operating systems.
